Pierhouse / Brooklyn Bridge Park
"The curtains are more than functional; they speak to the spirit and bring the architecture to life." - Erik Bruce
The most important aspect of this design program was to maintain the spectacular views of lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. The clients also needed privacy from the elevated sidewalk outside their windows connecting Brooklyn Heights to the Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The center privacy layer concept allows light and visibility both above for the views and below. The sheer portion below provides a feeling of extending the interior space out onto the terrace expanding the visible square footage of the apartment. We used this element in a playful way to connect the stair landing to the sitting area by literally stepping the sheer curtain lengths down the rise of the staircase. A unique solution for a challenging condition.
